Vision

A poverty-free society built on the principles of compassion and equity

Mission

To alleviate poverty by empowering socially and economically marginalized segments of the society through interest-free microfinance and education

Launched in 2001, hundreds of thousands of poor families have been supported through Akhuwat’s interest-free microfinance loans. As Akhuwat’s core program, Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance (AIM) provides interest-free loans to the underprivileged to enable them in creating sustainable pathways out of poverty. With 800+ branches in over 400 cities across Pakistan, AIM is the largest interest-free microfinance program in the world, Alhamdulliah.

AIM was set up as a company under “Section 42 of the Companies Ordinance 1984” with the objective of providing interest-free microfinance to the impoverished and underprivileged members of society so as to enhance their standards of living. Drawing on the principles of justice and brotherhood, AIM strives to alleviate poverty by creating a system based on mutual support in society. It works through establishing centers in religious places, fostering and harnessing the spirit of volunteerism, and aspiring to transform its borrowers into agents of change. To date, Akhuwat has disbursed over 4.2 million interest-free loans amounting to PKR 128 billion ($805 million) helping 3 million families across Pakistan.

The trust and ownership of the program felt by poor communities is evident in Akhuwat’s 99.9% loan repayment rate. Loan application and disbursement procedures are designed to be helpful to low income borrowers – they are simple to understand, locally provided and quickly accessible with minimal paperwork.

Akhuwat’s unique microfinance program has won many accolades, in Pakistan and abroad, and its innovative approach for poverty alleviation has been researched and studied in universities around the world. Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance is supported by the Federal Government and Provincial Governments of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir.
